Project Description
My name is Jan and I am a Mechanical Engineer with a specialism in cardiovascular engineering. I am a graduate of RWTH Aachen University.During my studies, I worked on the development of cardiovascular stents and devices. This deepened my passion for innovative medical technologies.
As part of the BIOMEND project, I am developing a bioresorbable device for closing large bore access sites used in minimally invasive surgeries.With over 1.2 million vascular closure procedures performed annually, this technology will significantly improve patient recovery times while aligning with the broader goal of advancing bioabsorbable medical solutions.
This PhD project aims to develop a device capable of safely removing long-term indwelling intravascular implants by reducing or preventing tissue ingrowth while respecting the body’s natural biological response. The device will leverage a sleeve formation mechanism to facilitate safe removal. Key objectives of the project include:
- Establishing a Design I/O matrix to guide the development process
- Developing a functional bioresorbable device for safe intravascular implant removal
- Producing early-stage prototypes for preliminary mechanical and functional testing
- Optimising the design and verifying late-stage prototypes using either Mg or Zn alloys, selecting the most suitable material for preclinical (animal) testing.
I am proud to be part of this collaborative effort within BIOMEND, where researchers across disciplines are working together to develop next-generation bioresorbable metallic medical devices.
