Bioabsorbable Zn Alloys and Forming Methods for EMD Applications

Project Description

 

My name is Kiarash and I am a Mechanical Engineer. I studied at Sharif University of Technology in Tehran, Iran. During my master’s studies, I developed a Severe Plastic Deformation method to enhance the mechanical properties of magnesium microtubes. This sparked my interest in bioabsorbable stents and led me to join BIOMEND.

As a PhD candidate, I am developing manufacturing processes for producing thin-walled tubes and thin wires made from zinc (Zn) and magnesium (Mg) alloys. I am working closely with Alex (DC1) on this project, which will feature improved mechanical properties and electrochemical stability. These materials will serve as the foundation for future absorbable biomedical devices.

The key objectives of my research include:

  • high-purity casting processes by modifying equipment to enhance material quality
  • indentify optimal forming techniques for producing thin Zn wires and tubes
  • establish warm forming methods to achieve ultra-fine grain microstructures using a micron-scale extrusion system
  • analyze microstructural features to assess their mechanical behavior and degradation properties
  • validate the processing route and ensure scalable production of suitable material

Together with Alex, I am excited to contribute to the development of innovative biomaterials that can transform the future of endovascular medical devices.
