Bioabsorbable Mg Alloys and Forming Methods for EMD Applications

Project Description

I am Alex, a Materials Science graduate of INSA Lyon, with a specialism in metallurgy, fracture mechanics and characterisation methods. As part of this PhD project, I am developing advanced magnesium (Mg) alloys that offer both high mechanical strength and controlled degradation behaviour, making them ideal for use in bioresorbable stents.

To achieve this, we are exploring innovative approaches in high-purity casting, advanced forming techniques, and microstructural analysis. Key objectives include:

  • Modifying casting processes to enhance material purity and stability
  • Identifying forming techniques to produce thin wires and tubes from Mg alloys
  • Developing warm forming methods to achieve ultra-fine grain structures using an in-house micron-scale extrusion system
  • Analyzing microstructural features to understand their impact on mechanical behavior and degradation properties
  • Validating the processing route and producing sufficient material for further development.

Together with Kiarash (DC2) we are laying the foundation for bioabsorbable stents that will be further refined by our research team.
