Endovascular Intracranial Stent For The Treatment of Intracranial Aneurysms

Project Description

My name is Amr and I completed my Master’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering at Cairo University. My Master’s research provided me with valuable insights into stent mechanics and computational simulations. Now, as part of the BIOMEND project, I am working on the development of a bioresorbable endovascular stent for the treatment of intracranial aneurysms.

Aneurysms are often treated using coils that induce thrombosis within the aneurysm. Stents are frequently used to stabilise these coils, but their implantation requires long-term antiplatelet therapy, which increases the risk of bleeding complications. A bioresorbable stent structure is the promising alternative. It will allow for stent-assisted treatment with reduced or even no long-term antiplatelet therapy.

My research aims to design, prototype, and optimize a wire-braided bioresorbable stent using magnesium, zinc, or alternative bioresorbable metal alloys, possibly integrating non-absorbable NiTi for improved performance. The project’s key objectives are as follows:

  • Establish a Design I/O matrix and explore geometric design alternatives for wire-braided stent structures
  • Produce early-stage prototypes to evaluate degradation kinetics, crimping behaviour, and deliverability
  • Optimise and verify the designs according to ISO 25539-2
  • Assessing radial force, bending behaviour, crush resistance, and crimpability in brain vessel models.
  • Produce late-stage prototypes for preclinical (animal) testing, ensuring compatibility with brain vasculature (1–6 mm diameter).

This project offers an unparalleled interdisciplinary environment, allowing me to work with Otto-von-Guericke-Universität Magdeburg, Embocraft GmbH, and leading experts in neuroradiology and medical engineering. I am excited to contribute to the next generation of bioabsorbable stents and help advance safer, more effective treatments for intracranial aneurysms!
