Bioresorbable Mg/Zn Coronary Stent for the Treatment of Coronary Artery Disease

Project Description

My name is Diego and I have a degree in Biomedical Engineering from Politecnico di Milano, where I specialised in biomechanics, biomaterials and finite element method (FEM) simulations for cardiovascular applications. I am currently working on the development and optimisation of thin-strut, bioabsorbable Mg/Zn coronary stents as part of the BIOMEND project. I will create next-generation stents that offer superior performance and controlled degradation. I will achieve this by leveraging the enhanced mechanical properties of the materials developed by Alex and Kiarash, along with the optimized manufacturing processes led by João. Bioabsorbable coronary stents are vital as they address the need for improved long-term outcomes and reduced complications in the treatment of coronary artery disease. Unlike conventional metallic stents, they are designed to gradually dissolve, minimising the risk of in-stent restenosis (artery re-narrowing) and blood clot formation. This project will develop a bioabsorbable coronary stent from Mg or Zn alloys, incorporating a thin strut design that ensures high radial strength and low recoil.

Key objectives of this project include:

  • Establish a Design I/O matrix based on clinical user needs
  • Conduct finite element simulations (using Abaqus) to explore optimal stent designs from preferred Mg & Zn alloys
  • Produce early-stage prototypes
  • Conduct in vitro bench testing to assess functional mechanical performance and corrosion behavior
  • Optimise stent design through computational modelling and validate final-stage prototypes according to ISO 25539-2, focusing on radial force, bending behaviour, crush resistance, and crimpability

I am passionate about the cardiovascular system and excited to contribute to the development of bioabsorbable stents that have the potential to improve patient outcomes and advance cardiovascular treatment.
