Performance Simulation of Bioabsorbable Metallic EMD

Project Description

My name is Vittoria and I hold a degree in Biomedical Engineering from Politecnico di Milano, Italy. I specialised in biomechanics and biomaterials. My research in the BIOMEND project focuses on computational simulations to predict the behaviour of bioabsorbable metallic endovascular medical devices (EMDs), with a particular emphasis on corrosion phenomena and the evolving mechanical performance of stents.This PhD project aims to develop a computational optimization framework to refine stent designs by identifying optimal parameters such as strut number, size, shape, and surface treatments. Using advanced finite element modeling (FEM) and phase-field approaches, the project will:

  • Develop an in silico finite element framework to virtually test stent structures
  • Simulating key functional properties, including crimping, deployment, recoil, foreshortening, radial strength, and bending
  • Implement a surface-based corrosion model using phase-field modelling
  • Predict the spatial and temporal progression of corrosion
  • Quantification of how mechanical properties evolve over time
  • Validate the developed computational framework through comparison with experimental data provided by DC5

Integrating numerical modelling with experimental insights will enable a more efficient and predictive design process for bioabsorbable stents, ensuring optimised mechanical performance and controlled degradation.
